Frequently Asked Questions
About Me
-
Yes! I have lived in Japan for more than ten years in total.
-
I grew up in a rural town in the southern United States. I studied history in graduate school and focused on Japanese history and immigration. Originally, I planned to live in Japan for a year to learn the language and better understand the culture but ended up staying long term.
-
While teaching business and globalization at a university, I wanted a creative outlet. Moving from working full-time in business to teaching it and doing freelance projects meant that very little of what I was creating was something for me. I missed writing in my style and really wanted to share a realistic view of Japan. Combining that with my love of travel, food, and photography led to the creation of this page.
-
I prefer efficient routes with a flexible base plan. I tend to focus on local cultural experiences, including food, history, and craftsmanship, but I always leave time in my itinerary to simply wander and explore. I also avoid overcrowded areas when possible.
Content & Topics
-
I often focus more on rural destinations, local food and drinks, history, and lesser-visited locations. I also share travel tips, itinerary ideas, and stories from life in Japan. While you may find the occasional blog or post about something popular or on the Golden Route, I try to offer other options and ideas as well. When I cover popular destinations, it’s usually to highlight places that are not as well known, businesses, or interesting experiences.
-
No. While I often highlight rural or lesser-visited places, I tend to write about anything that fits my interest. That’s why you see anything from craft beer in Tokyo to small destinations in northern Japan.
-
This boils down to a mix of research, personal curiosity, interest, and recommendations. Plus, I often search on Google Maps when I have free time.

Travel Consulting Services
-
Yes. I offer itinerary creation and travel consultations. I initially started by helping friends and word-of mouth clients, and now offer it as a service to others.
-
Each itinerary begins with a questionnaire and conversation to understand your travel style, interests, and needs. From there, I design a fully personalized plan. While some itineraries may include similar things (like places in major cities), the daily recommended itinerary, restaurants, sights, and everything are individually based. I provide a list of essential phrases, cultural information, and tips to help you have a successful trip. When you’re traveling, I am also available if you need help or advice.
-
The best part of creating itineraries is that I can usually help most people no matter their budget. While my own travel tends to be mid-range or luxury, but I always adapt recommendations to each traveler’s budget and comfort. Everything is personalized.
-
Absolutely. I work with first-time travelers, honeymooners, business travelers, and returning travelers Each itinerary or consultation is based completely on your level of comfort, interests, and travel style. I take a lot of the stress away from planning so that you can fully enjoy your travel.
-
A few months’ notice is ideal for full itineraries or those moving to Japan, but I may be able to expedite depending on my availability. Basic consultations can often be booked a few days before traveling.
-
Because I am not a travel agent, I do not make reservations, but I provide recommendations and explain how to book them.
